O Canada!

Today started at 3am when I unintentionally woke up as did David. I asked him, “do you hear them calling?” and without skipping a beat he said, “the blueberries?” Blueberries at 3am in bed are a decadent and delicious treat!

We woke up for real at a reasonable hour, then met Matt and Julie as planned at SeaTac. We meandered our way from there to Port Angeles, stopping more than a couple of times for caching activities. Despite our collective 42 years of caching (Matt and I are both at 20 years, David is quickly approaching 2 years, and Julie is a member of the caching family but not much of a cacher), we were reminded that reading the cache page is often helpful.

We had reservations for a ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. While waiting for the ferry, we sampled New Zealand style ice cream, which was basically a vanilla base to which fruit was added. Never heard of it before, and it was a worthwhile experiment, though it’s not necessarily something I would seek out in the future.

The ferry ride was very nice. It was clear, the water relatively smooth, and rather relaxing. Someone has to be the last one off the boat and while we can’t claim that distinction, we came close as only about 3 or 4 cars were after us, and the ferry had already loaded and left for Port Angeles before we reached customs.

Entering Canada was interesting. Where do you live: Oregon and North Carolina. How do you know each other: 2 of us are dating, 2 of us are married, and we share a hobby. Do you have any weapons (apparently a question asked only of US citizens). Have a nice stay. We were not asked about fruit, so the remaining blueberries entered Canada with us.

We found our lodging without difficulty, took a longer than planned walk to find dinner, and found a Tim Horton’s en route. Got to see the Inner Harbour and the Government House at night, and even bought some Roger’s Chocolates on the way back to the wonderful airbnb that Matt and Julie found. Surprisingly enough, we were so tired that we didn’t even eat any of the chocolate tonight, but that just leaves more for tomorrow.

A fabulous day, and if the rest of the trip is as wonderful as today it will be an amazing couple of weeks.
